The Independent Hajj Reporters (IHR), a faith-based civil society organisation, has commended the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), and other security agencies for their coordinated efforts that delivered a seamless 2026 Hajj experience for more than 40,000 Nigerian pilgrims.

In a statement issued over the weekend, the group’s National Coordinator, Ibrahim Muhammad, praised the proactive surveillance deployed to safeguard pilgrims throughout their journey—both within Nigeria and during transit abroad. He noted that the operation’s success hinged on meticulous planning and real-time intelligence.

Hajj operations demand intricate logistical coordination, encompassing the movement of worshippers from their residences to orientation centres, onward to Hajj camps, and across state lines to over 14 designated embarkation airports nationwide. The statement highlighted that the visible and undercover presence of security personnel was instrumental in averting any major incidents.

“The combined deployment of uniformed and covert security operatives played a critical role in executing these complex movements without a single serious incident throughout the 2026 Hajj season,” the statement read.

Looking ahead, the IHR urged agencies to sustain rigorous intelligence-gathering and thorough vetting of both Hajj and Umrah applicants. The group warned that pilgrimage routes must not become a loophole for fugitives or terrorists seeking to evade detection. It cited the recent arrest of several high-risk individuals in Katsina shortly after their return as tangible proof that the current strategy is yielding dividends.

“The arrests in Katsina are a direct outcome of sustained surveillance and cross-agency coordination. We urge the security establishment to maintain this momentum,” Muhammad added.

The commendation aligns with the IHR’s long-standing tradition of recognising security excellence. The organisation previously presented awards to the DSS, the Nigeria Police Force, and the NIS during its post-Hajj lectures in 2023, 2024, and 2025 respectively.

The group concluded by expressing optimism that the prevailing synergy among all agencies involved will be preserved and strengthened for future Hajj and Umrah operations, ensuring that Nigeria continues to set a benchmark for pilgrimage security in the region.
