Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially nominated Murtala Sule Garo as the new deputy governor of the state, pending screening and confirmation by the State House of Assembly.

The announcement was made in a late-night statement on Tuesday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad. According to the statement, the nomination complies with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers a governor to nominate a deputy where a vacancy exists.

The deputy governorship position became vacant following the resignation of Comrade Abdussalam Gwarzo on 27 March 2026.

“Following wide consultations with key stakeholders, the Governor has requested the Assembly to grant the necessary approval for Garo’s nomination,” the statement added.

Profile of the nominee

Murtala Sule Garo, 48, is a seasoned political administrator with more than two decades of experience in both elective and appointed roles. His previous positions include State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the Governor, and Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area.

He has also served as Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State and later as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

In the 2023 general election, Garo was the deputy governorship candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State.
