Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has appointed Dr Ezinne Chinyere Benjamin-Kalu, wife of Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, as chairperson of the board of Abia State University Teaching Hospital.
The appointment was confirmed in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Emmanuel Meribole, who said it takes immediate effect.
The development has, however, stirred political conversations across the state, with many observers interpreting it as more than a routine administrative decision.
Though the government said the move is aimed at strengthening governance and improving healthcare delivery at the hospital, political watchers believe it signals a deepening alliance between Otti and Kalu.
The perceived alignment, according to analysts, has long been an open secret but now appears to be unfolding in the public space.
Observers also recalled that the Deputy Speaker’s wife had publicly praised the governor during his recent birthday celebration — a gesture that further fuelled speculations, especially as Kalu is seen as a strong contender ahead of the 2027 political contest.
The newly constituted board comprises prominent medical and administrative professionals, including Prof Nneka Chioma Okoronkwo, who will serve as Chief Medical Director.
Charging the appointees, Otti urged them to justify the confidence reposed in them by repositioning the institution into a centre of excellence in healthcare delivery, research and medical training.
Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Umuahia, remains a key medical facility in the South-East but has been grappling with years of underfunding, poor infrastructure and welfare concerns.
The new board is expected to address these long-standing challenges as pressure mounts for visible reforms.
