A civil society group has thrown its weight behind Senator Jibrin Isa Echocho for 2027, urging the All Progressives Congress (APC) to ensure a transparent primary in Kogi East.
The Kogi East Political and Economic Summit Group declared its support for the senator at a press briefing in Abuja, citing his constituency projects and legislative influence.
Convener Comrade Okpanachi Jacob accused unnamed political interests of orchestrating media campaigns to discredit Echocho ahead of the APC senatorial primary. He alleged that elements within the Kogi State Government were behind the attacks.
“Everything they mentioned is not in line with the truth. Senator Jibrin Isa Echocho has helped to polish the image of the APC in Kogi East,” Jacob said.
The group listed projects facilitated by the senator across the district, including hospitals, school buildings, boreholes, road construction, and agricultural support programmes. It also highlighted Echocho’s committee leadership and ranking in the National Assembly, which it said had attracted federal appointments to the area.
Rejecting calls to rotate the senate seat out of Kogi East, the group argued that the zone remains politically disadvantaged given its population size and lack of governorship representation.
With the APC yet to announce an official winner of the senatorial primary, the group appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and party leaders to oversee a credible process.
“The best the APC can do for us in Kogi East is to return Senator Echocho,” the group added.
The endorsement comes amid intensifying political realignments in Kogi State ahead of the 2027 elections.
