In a significant development, a coalition of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members, spearheaded by Nyesom Wike, the FCT Minister, has advocated for the presidential ticket to be zoned to the southern region in anticipation of the 2027 elections. This motion was put forth during a meeting in Abuja on Monday night, attended by three former governors: Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Okezie Ikpeazu, and Samuel Ortom.
During the meeting, Wike announced that Samuel Anyanwu is to be recognised as the legitimate national secretary of the PDP. “We categorically support Senator Anyanwu as the duly elected national secretary of our party,” he stated.
The group argued that for the sake of fairness and in accordance with the party’s constitution, an announcement should be made to zone the presidential candidacy to the south. They contended that only Anyanwu is authorised to issue notices for significant party meetings, declaring all other communications as null and void.
According to insiders, the meeting aimed to obstruct the national convention set for August 28, during which new members of the National Working Committee were to be elected. Despite his membership in the PDP, Wike is known to be an ally of President Bola Tinubu from the All Progressives Congress (APC), and is believed to be using his influence to bolster Tinubu’s re-election campaign for 2027.
