Amazon has announced plans to invest a minimum of $20 billion in Pennsylvania to bolster its data centre infrastructure, reinforcing the company’s commitment to artificial intelligence development and cloud computing expansion.

The move highlights Big Tech’s growing dedication to substantial capital investments in generative AI, as leading global firms continue to compete in delivering the most advanced AI models and cloud services.

“This investment will support the development of cutting-edge cloud technologies and artificial intelligence,” Amazon said in a statement.

“It will also create 1,250 high-skilled jobs and support thousands more in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centre supply chain.”

Salem Township and Falls Township have been identified as the first two communities to host new AWS campuses.

The announcement comes less than a week after Amazon revealed plans to invest $10 billion in North Carolina and more than $5 billion in new cloud infrastructure in Taiwan. These initiatives form part of Amazon’s broader strategy to expand its AI and cloud capabilities globally.

Amazon’s capital expenditure for the first quarter of the year totalled approximately \$25 billion. The company has stated it expects to sustain this level of spending throughout the rest of 2025.
