The Executive Chairman of Jaba Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Hon. Larai Ishaku, has called for stronger commitment to the protection of women’s rights and the promotion of gender equality as the world commemorates the 2026 International Women’s Day.

In a statement on Saturday to mark the global celebration, Ishaku said this year’s theme, “Rights, Justice, Action for All Women and Girls,” serves as a strong call to dismantle the structural barriers that hinder women and girls from enjoying equal opportunities and justice.

According to her, discriminatory laws, weak legal protections and harmful social norms continue to undermine the dignity, safety and progress of women in many societies.

She urged governments, institutions and community leaders to unite in demanding equal rights and justice for women and girls across the world.

“Let us unite to demand equal rights and justice for women and girls worldwide. We must ensure that our laws protect women from violence, discrimination and exploitation,” she said.

Ishaku also stressed the need for the justice system to believe and support survivors of abuse while ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.

The council chairman noted that achieving gender equality requires deliberate and sustained action from stakeholders at all levels of society.

She further called for greater investment in programmes that empower women economically, socially and politically, adding that inclusive development cannot be achieved if women are left behind.

Ishaku, who is currently the only female Local Government Chairman in Kaduna State, reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to promoting policies and initiatives that support the welfare, protection and empowerment of women and girls in Jaba Local Government Area.

“International Women’s Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while renewing the global commitment to gender justice and equality.” She added.

PUNCH reports that International Women’s Day is observed annually on March 8 to recognise the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and to advocate for greater gender equality worldwide.

End.
