Marking International Widows’ Day 2026, Abuja-based non-governmental organisation Helpline Social Support Initiative (HSSI) has issued a call for greater societal recognition of widows’ resilience, strength, and enduring contributions to their families and communities.

The United Nations observes the day globally to highlight the economic marginalisation, social exclusion, and harmful cultural practices that widows frequently endure following bereavement.

In a statement, HSSI Communications Officer Cecilia Kadiri reflected on the organisation’s 23-year commitment to supporting vulnerable women across six states, including the FCT, Niger, Kogi, Nasarawa, Enugu, and Kaduna.

“What began as a modest intervention has evolved into a comprehensive empowerment programme,” she said. “Through our interest-free revolving loan scheme – now active in over 17 clusters – alongside skills acquisition, financial literacy training, and mentorship, we have enabled widows to establish sustainable enterprises, improve household incomes, and become active contributors to local economies.”

Mrs Kadiri acknowledged that widowhood remains fraught with economic precarity, limited access to resources, and entrenched stigmatisation, urging collective action from government, civil society, development partners, faith-based institutions, and the private sector to dismantle these barriers.

HSSI reaffirmed its pledge to expand financial inclusion, promote entrepreneurship, and advocate for robust policies that safeguard widows’ rights and welfare.

Addressing widows directly, she added: “Your strength is seen, your struggles are acknowledged, and your contributions are valued. Together, we can build communities where every widow has the opportunity not merely to survive, but to thrive.”
