The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has urgently advised residents living near the River Niger in Kebbi, Niger, and Kwara states to relocate to safer areas.

In an official statement, Zubaida Umar, the director-general of NEMA, highlighted that this warning follows reports of increasing water levels upstream in the Republic of Benin.

Umar confirmed that the agency has activated its flood preparedness and response protocols, instructing regional and zonal offices along the River Niger corridor to enhance public awareness and mobilise at-risk communities.

“Residents in Kebbi, Niger, and Kwara states, which share borders with Benin Republic, are particularly vulnerable and must take necessary precautions,” the statement indicated.

“NEMA offices have been directed to educate communities, urging those in high-risk flood zones to evacuate to elevated, safer grounds.”

Umar further urged state governments in the affected regions to bolster their respective State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) and Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs).

She emphasised the importance of implementing contingency plans to mitigate the potential effects of flooding.

“It is vital that we coordinate our efforts and respond promptly to safeguard lives and livelihoods,” she stated.

“The agency is dedicated to minimising the impact of this year’s flooding and protecting at-risk communities.”

Umar reaffirmed NEMA’s commitment to a comprehensive national flood response strategy amid escalating climate risks.
