LG Electronics (LG) has officially commissioned a solar‑powered borehole in Omuafor community in Aboh-Mbaise, Owerri, Imo State, extending sustainable water access to residents while marking the company’s first renewable energy‑driven water intervention in South‑Eastern Nigeria.

The project was officially unveiled at a commissioning ceremony attended by community leaders, residents and the Royal Father, highlighting the cultural and social significance of the initiative. The intervention is designed to provide reliable access to clean and safe water while operating independently of grid electricity through renewable solar power.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Paul Mba, Head, Corporate Marketing, LG Electronics Nigeria, said: access to clean water remains essential to healthy living and inclusive development. By integrating solar technology into the borehole system, the company aims to ensure an uninterrupted water supply while reducing environmental impact and supporting long‑term sustainability.

“At LG, we believe that innovation should create meaningful impact beyond products. This solar‑powered borehole project reflects our commitment to sustainability, community well-being, and improving everyday life for Nigerians,” he said.

The solar‑powered borehole is expected to improve daily living conditions within the community by supporting better hygiene practices, reducing exposure to water‑borne diseases, and easing the burden of sourcing potable water. The project is also anticipated to have a positive impact on women and children, who are often the most affected by limited access to clean water.

During the commissioning, the Eze of Omuafor Kingdom, His Royal Highness Dr. Eze Justin Nwaneri, said, “This solar‑powered borehole is a historic and welcome development for our community. Access to clean water is vital to our people, and we commend LG Electronics for partnering with us to deliver a sustainable solution that will benefit both present and future generations.”

Community leaders welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely and impactful contribution that aligns with local needs. The presence of the Royal Father at the commissioning underscored the importance of collaboration between corporate institutions and traditional leadership in driving meaningful development.

Designed to operate independently of conventional power sources, the solar‑powered borehole uses renewable energy to provide a reliable and environmentally responsible water supply. The system ensures uninterrupted access to potable water, particularly in areas where power infrastructure can be inconsistent.

By combining water infrastructure with clean energy technology, LG addresses a fundamental community need while minimizing environmental impact, reflecting its belief that sustainability solutions must be both practical and future‑focused.

On his part, Mr. Moses Osime, Public Relations & Sustainability Manager, LG Electronics Nigeria, said, the Owerri solar‑powered borehole project forms part of LG’s broader Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy, which focuses on creating shared value through sustainable innovation. Globally, LG continues to integrate renewable energy solutions, responsible resource use, and community development into its operations and social initiatives.

In Nigeria, LG remains committed to leveraging technology to address real societal challenges, supporting cleaner energy adoption, improved access to essential resources, and inclusive growth at the grassroots level.

Through initiatives such as the Owerri borehole project, LG demonstrates how global sustainability goals can translate into tangible local impact. The company continues to explore opportunities to expand similar ESG‑driven interventions across Nigeria, reinforcing its mission to deliver progress that benefits both people and the planet.

In addition, the Udo Chairman, Mr. Collins Uche, said, “The impact of this project on our daily lives cannot be overstated. Reliable access to clean water will improve health, reduce hardship, and support overall community wellbeing. We are grateful to LG for responding to a real need with a lasting solution in our community”.

By tackling critical needs head-on with bold, responsible innovation, LG transforms its brand promise, Life’s Good ( https://www.lg.com/global/our-brand/), into real-world impact that reaches far beyond the home, driving a future that’s stronger, greener, and built to last.
