Troops from the Joint Task Force, Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), have neutralised three suspected bandits and seized two motorcycles in the Ukum Local Government Area of Benue.

The acting media information officer at the JTF OPWS headquarters, Lt. Ahmad Zubairu, announced the development in a statement on Friday in Makurdi.

Mr Zubairu stated that the operation, which received support from the Nigeria Police Force and the Benue State Community Protection Guards, took place on Thursday.

He explained that, acting on intelligence reports, the team confronted the criminal group at an illegal roadblock along the route connecting Aturuku, Wembe, and Ayati villages in Borkyo council ward.

Intelligence indicated that the armed gang had been ambushing and robbing travellers approaching the blocked junction without realising the danger.

“Upon making contact with the criminals, the troops engaged them decisively, resulting in the elimination of three of the criminals, while others fled into nearby bushes.

“During the operation, two motorcycles used by the criminals were recovered, and an intensified search effort is currently underway to locate and apprehend those who escaped.

“Subsequent findings revealed that the three individuals neutralised belonged to a notorious syndicate responsible for widespread insecurity, including repeated kidnappings across Ukum LGA.

“Their activities are thought to be linked to recent abduction cases reported around the vicinity of the Zaki-Biam Yam Market,” he added.

He noted that community members later identified the deceased suspects as Sughter Abelebe and Sughnen Abelebe, both from Ugbaam Council Ward, along with a third individual from Tse Kpeakaa, Kundav Council Ward.

The force commander of OPWS, Maj-Gen Moses Gara, praised the collaboration among security personnel and commended their courage, discipline, and professionalism throughout the mission.

Mr Gara encouraged the troops to maintain their operational momentum, enhance intelligence-led operations, and strengthen security presence in high-risk communities.

The commander reaffirmed OPWS’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives, supporting civil authority, and restoring lasting peace across the joint operation areas.
