A devastating incident occurred in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday morning, as a stampede during a children’s carnival at Islamic High School, Basorun, resulted in multiple fatalities.
According to a statement from the state’s Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the majority of the victims were children.
In response to the tragedy, the government promptly dispatched a rapid response team to transport the injured to various hospitals across Ibadan for urgent medical care.
The state government is currently awaiting a comprehensive report from the Police Command to ascertain the precise number of casualties involved.
Importantly, the government clarified that it had no role in the event’s organization. “The state Ministry of Health was not asked to provide any logistical support for the private funfair,” Oyelade stated.
He further emphasized that the government is committed to supporting the victims and their families “through this challenging time.”
The Commissioner advised concerned parents to check local medical facilities in Ibadan where the stampede victims were taken, including Patnas Hospital, Basorun; Western Hospital, Basorun; Ring Road State Hospital; Molly Specialist Hospital; and University College Hospital (UCH).
While extending heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this tragedy, the state government urged the public to remain calm and cooperative during this difficult period. “We are actively gathering relevant information, and necessary assistance is being organized for the victims,” Oyelade concluded.
