In a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections, Hon. Godfrey Gaiya, Special Assistant on Political Matters (North West) to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress to join the opposition African Democratic Congress.

Gaiya, a former Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, confirmed his defection in an exclusive interview with PUNCH Online on Thursday, revealing that he will contest for the Kaduna South Senatorial seat.

“My decision to join the ADC was carefully considered. It reflects consultations with my supporters and constituents who desire a credible alternative that prioritises people’s welfare, peace and development” Gaiya said.

The former lawmaker described his move as driven by principle rather than personal grievances, stressing that the ADC provides a platform for Nigerians seeking a departure from “politics of exclusion and unfulfilled promises.”

He added that contesting the Kaduna South Senate seat would give him a broader platform to address the socio-economic challenges facing his constituents.

While expressing gratitude to the APC leadership for past opportunities, Gaiya said the future of democracy lies in building stronger institutions and inclusive political platforms.

Efforts to obtain reactions from the APC and the Speaker’s office were unsuccessful as of press time.

Political observers say Gaiya’s defection signals early manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 general elections, as parties reposition themselves to consolidate support and attract influential actors.

Gaiya’s move is also seen as part of a broader trend of political realignments in Kaduna State, where several lawmakers and aides are recalibrating alliances to enhance their electoral prospects.

With the 2027 polls approaching, defections like Gaiya’s could reshape the political landscape, especially in key senatorial districts such as Kaduna South, a stronghold long dominated by the APC.
