The ADC Youth League has declared its support for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its decision to suspend correspondences with the David Mark-led faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The Youth League described the David Mark-led faction as “illegitimate and illegal,” alleging that it is made up of individuals attempting to hijack the party through undemocratic means after failing to gain public trust.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Information and Voter Education, Lawali Hassan, the group said INEC’s action, based on the Court of Appeal judgment of March 12, 2023, demonstrates its commitment to protecting the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process.

The ADC Youth League urges all stakeholders to respect INEC’s authority and to adhere to the legal processes that govern our political environment.

Hassan said: “It has become increasingly evident that the David Mark-led faction of the ADC is not only illegitimate but also illegal. This faction represents a convergence of old power seekers, individuals who, having failed to earn the trust of the electorate through genuine democratic means, resort to subterfuge in a bid to hijack the party.

“Their actions are not merely a threat to the ADC but a broader threat to the democratic fabric of our nation. The ADC Youth League firmly believes that political parties must be governed by principles of transparency, accountability, and the will of the people, rather than the whims of a select few.

“The recent ruling by the Court of Appeal has brought to light the legal ambiguities surrounding the leadership of the ADC. The faction led by David Mark has been characterized by internal discord and power struggles, which have only served to undermine the party’s credibility.

“The ADC Youth League recognizes that the true leadership of the ADC lies with those who have remained committed to the party’s founding ideals and who continue to advocate for the interests of the Nigerian populace.”

The group also commended INEC’s decision to disengage from all ADC factions and suspend monitoring of party activities pending the resolution of the matter at the Federal High Court, describing it as a step toward ensuring fairness in the electoral process.

The group also applauds INEC for its unwavering dedication to maintaining the sanctity of our democratic institutions.

He added, “The announcement that David Mark’s name will be removed from the INEC portal is a necessary action to reflect the current legal standing of the ADC. It is imperative that the commission acts decisively to prevent any further confusion regarding the legitimacy of the party’s leadership.

“The challenge brought forth by Nafiu Bala, the former vice chairman of the ADC, against the emergence of David Mark and his caretaker committee is a testament to the resilience of true democratic values. It is a clarion call for all members of the ADC and the broader political community to engage in self-reflection and to prioritize the interests of the Nigerian people above personal ambitions.

“The ADC Youth League stands with Nafiu Bala and all those who seek to restore integrity and accountability within the ADC.
In conclusion, the Northern Youth Alliance for Security reaffirms its support for the Independent National Electoral Commission in its pursuit of a fair electoral process.
