The Senate has formally rebuked Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, over his recent call for a United Nations-led investigation into the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, accusing him of undermining Nigeria’s internal security mechanisms.

Governor Makinde had, during a statewide broadcast on Monday—hours after the military formally handed over the rescued hostages following 56 days in captivity—urged the UN and international human rights bodies to scrutinise the incident, arguing that it raised questions beyond the scope of domestic institutions.

However, the Upper Chamber dismissed the proposal during Tuesday’s plenary, maintaining that such matters fall squarely within the purview of Nigeria’s armed forces and intelligence agencies. The rebuke came via an additional prayer to a motion sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) and co-sponsored by all senators. Senator Adams Oshiomhole (APC, Edo North) raised the counter-prayer, which was seconded by Senator Aniekan Bassey (APC, Cross River South).

While rejecting the governor’s UN request, the Senate heaped praise on President Bola Tinubu, the military high command, the police, and intelligence services for executing a professionally coordinated rescue operation. The chamber specifically honoured Lieutenant F. A. Isaac, Private Silas Musa, and Sergeant Abena John Jerome, who paid the supreme sacrifice during the mission, observing a minute’s silence in their memory.

Lance Corporal Adamu Hussain was also singled out for commendation for his gallantry, with the Senate urging the authorities to ensure he receives optimal medical care and full welfare entitlements.

In a broader resolution, the Senate called on the Federal Government to expedite the payment of statutory death benefits, insurance claims, and pensions to the families of fallen personnel. It further urged the government to sustain the momentum of military and intelligence operations against terrorists and kidnappers by investing in modern surveillance technology, logistics, and enhanced welfare packages for security operatives.

The chamber extended its condolences to the bereaved families and the entire security community, while praying for the peaceful repose of the departed and a full recovery for the injured. The Senate also congratulated the rescued children, teachers, and their families on the conclusion of their traumatic ordeal.
