The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Tonye Cole yesterday escaped death when suspected political thugs attacked him at the GRA Junction axis of Port Harcourt.
The hoodlums also attacked security operatives attached to the APC governorship hopeful as well as vehicles that were in his convoy.
LEADERSHIP gathered that Cole was on his way to the state headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to honour an agreement reached with the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Johnson Sinikiem, on the collection of certified true copies (CTC) of the results of just concluded general election in the state.
Cole, had while addressing newsmen shortly after visiting the INEC office last Friday, said he spoke with Sinikiem, who assured him that the CTC of the results would be ready by Monday (yesterday).
It was gathered that in order not to give room for a clash that could lead to bloodshed, the security operatives attached to the governorship candidate pulled him out of the grip of the suspected thugs and safely return to the APC secretariat in the GRA area of Port Harcourt.
Both the APC and the Rivers State Police Command are yet to issue any statement on the ugly development.
