Obi Slams Tinubu Over Broken Promise on Electricity Amid Power Grid Failures

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has launched a scathing attack on President Bola Tinubu, accusing him of failing to deliver on his campaign promise regarding electricity supply. This criticism comes in light of the national power grid’s second collapse in January 2026, underscoring ongoing instability within Nigeria’s electricity sector.**

In a statement posted on his verified X account, Obi reiterated the stark reality facing Nigerians: “No Steady Power in Four Years, No Second Term.” He recalled Tinubu’s bold 2022 campaign commitment, which asserted that if he could not ensure stable electricity in his first four years, he should not seek re-election.

“President Bola Tinubu’s campaign promise in 2022 was clear: ‘If I do not provide steady electricity in my first four years, do not vote for me for a second term,’” Obi stated emphatically, highlighting the glaring contradictions between promises made and the current situation.

Obi pointed out the alarming frequency of grid failures, noting that the national grid collapsed twice in January 2026 alone, even before the month had concluded. “Yet, in January 2026 alone, the national grid has already collapsed twice, and the month is not even over,” he stated, adding that the grid had faced approximately twelve collapses throughout the previous year.

These repeated failures, Obi argued, should be a cause for grave concern among Nigerians, as they starkly contrast the assurances provided by the current administration. “This reality sharply contradicts the promise and should worry every patriotic Nigerian,” he asserted, urging citizens to hold their leaders accountable.

Moreover, Obi took aim at Tinubu’s frequent foreign travels, noting that while critical domestic challenges persist, the president is currently in Turkey. “At the same time, the President is on another foreign trip, this time to Turkey, a country of about 87 million people—roughly a third of Nigeria’s population,” he remarked, drawing attention to the disparity in electricity generation capacities between the two nations.

Obi highlighted that Turkey generates and distributes over 120,000 megawatts of electricity, while Nigeria struggles with less than five percent of that capacity. “The contrast is both striking and painful,” he added, urging Tinubu to prioritise addressing Nigeria’s internal issues rather than embarking on overseas trips.

“Our appeal is simple: stay at home and confront the nation’s problems,” Obi implored, warning that if this trend continues, Nigerians might soon hear of trips to remote destinations like Palau or Vanuatu while critical issues at home remain unaddressed.

Furthermore, Obi expressed concern over what he described as an excessive preoccupation with the upcoming 2027 elections, rather than focusing on governance. “And yet, our collective preoccupation seems to be the next election, rather than how to secure good governance,” he stated.

In light of these issues, Obi called on Nigerians to demand accountability and responsible leadership from their elected officials. Stressing the importance of unity, he said, “We should be joining hands to demand accountability and responsible leadership, and to save Nigerians from the indignity and suffering caused by persistent bad governance.”

The former Anambra State governor’s statements reflect a growing frustration among the populace regarding the state of electricity in Nigeria. As the nation grapples with ongoing power shortages, many citizens are left questioning the government’s commitment to fulfilling its promises, particularly in a sector that is vital for economic growth and development.

Obi’s remarks resonate with the broader discourse surrounding governance and accountability in Nigeria. As citizens continue to experience the impacts of inadequate electricity supply, the demand for transparency and effective leadership becomes increasingly urgent.

The ongoing power crises serve as a stark reminder of the challenges that lie ahead for Nigeria. With increasing awareness and dissatisfaction among the populace, leaders must take heed of the calls for action. The country’s future hinges on its ability to address these pressing issues, and the electorate must remain vigilant in holding their leaders accountable.

In conclusion, Obi’s critique of Tinubu’s administration highlights the pressing need for action in the electricity sector. As Nigeria faces the consequences of repeated power grid failures, the call for responsible governance has never been more critical. Citizens must unite to demand accountability and effective leadership to ensure a brighter future for the nation.

As this situation unfolds, it remains imperative for Nigerians to stay informed and engaged. The current power crisis not only affects daily life but also poses significant challenges to economic stability and growth. The future of Nigeria’s electricity supply and the government’s ability to deliver on its commitments depend on the collective efforts of its citizens and their leaders.

The stakes are high, and the time for change is now.
