The Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media to the Minister of Power, Bolaji Tunji, has dismissed a viral resignation letter attributed to Adebayo Adelabu, describing it as fake.

The letter, which surfaced on Tuesday, claimed that Adelabu had resigned from his position to pursue the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State. It was reportedly addressed to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

However, Tunji, speaking to TheCable, clarified that the minister remains in office, insisting that the purported letter did not emanate from Adelabu’s office.

“He has not resigned. That letter of resignation did not come from his office,” Tunji said.

When asked whether the minister would eventually resign to contest the 2027 governorship election, the spokesman was non-committal.

“When the time comes, everything will be revealed,” he added.

Adelabu had, in June 2025, met with stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress in Oyo State, where he declared his intention to contest the governorship seat in 2027.

The development comes amid a directive by President Bola Tinubu on March 17, mandating all political appointees seeking elective offices in 2027 to resign on or before March 31.

Adelabu, a former Deputy Governor (Operations) of the Central Bank of Nigeria, resigned from the apex bank in 2018 to contest the 2019 governorship election under the APC but lost to Governor Seyi Makinde of the Peoples Democratic Party.

He also contested the 2023 governorship election under the Accord Party after defecting from the APC, following his loss in the party’s primary to former senator Teslim Folarin. He, however, lost again to Makinde.

Adelabu later returned to the APC in 2023 and was subsequently appointed Minister of Power by President Tinubu.
