A delegation of Nigerian scholars in Australia has presented a reform agenda to Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Australia, Ambassador Femi Pedro, as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries and deepen diaspora engagement.

The scholars, led by Chris Juwon Fayomi, presented the agenda during a strategic meeting with the envoy, where they also congratulated him on his appointment and applauded some of his early initiatives at the Nigerian mission.

The delegation particularly commended the implementation of the contactless passport renewal system, describing it as a significant step towards improving consular services for Nigerians living in Australia.

The scholars adopted a solutions-driven approach by proposing practical measures aimed at enhancing cooperation between Nigeria and Australia.

Their reform agenda centred on three key areas: strengthening collaboration between Nigerian scholars and Australian industries operating in Nigeria, promoting parliamentary friendship and policy engagement, and expanding bilateral partnerships in mining, agriculture, education, innovation, research and technology transfer.

A comprehensive position paper detailing the proposals was formally presented to the High Commissioner.

Speaking during the engagement, Ambassador Pedro praised the delegation for focusing on constructive ideas capable of advancing national development and strengthening diplomatic relations.

He said the proposals aligned with ongoing efforts to explore new opportunities for cooperation between Nigeria and Australia.

Pedro disclosed that he had already commissioned a pilot study on trade, investment and education opportunities between the two countries, adding that the findings would help shape future engagements and partnerships.

The envoy reaffirmed his commitment to fostering closer collaboration between Nigerian professionals in Australia and relevant institutions in both countries.

He also announced plans to establish an annual forum that would bring together Nigerian professionals, government representatives, Australian industries and policymakers to identify areas of mutual benefit and strengthen bilateral cooperation.

Addressing concerns over communication between the Nigerian mission and members of the diaspora community, Pedro assured participants that his administration would remain accessible and responsive to the needs of Nigerians across Australia.

He stressed that the mission’s doors remained open to students, scholars and professionals seeking support and collaboration.
