The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has ordered an investigation into allegations linking two senior police officers to the disappearance and alleged killing of Abubakar Idris, popularly known as Dadiyata.

The officers named in the allegations are CSP Hussaini Gimba and CSP Hassan Gimba.

The move followed petitions submitted on Friday by Kano-based activist and human rights lawyer, Abba Hikima.

The petitions drew attention to allegations reportedly made by Muhammad Musa Kamarawa, a former Senior Special Assistant to ex-Bello Matawalle.

Kamarawa was said to have alleged that the officers threatened him and claimed they had killed Dadiyata and others in his presence during Operations Yaki in Kaduna.

According to one of the petitions, a transparent probe would clear the officers if the allegations were false.

The petition added that if the claims were established to be true, justice must prevail “irrespective of rank, office or influence.”

The lawyer also urged the police authorities to constitute an independent investigative panel, citing growing public concern over Dadiyata’s disappearance.

Acknowledging receipt of the petitions, the IGP, through his Principal Staff Officer, CF Lateef Adio Ahmed, confirmed that the matter had been referred to the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Monitoring Unit for immediate action.

The police authorities also assured the petitioners of the Force’s commitment to justice and accountability.

Dadiyata, a lecturer and social media activist, was abducted from his residence in Barnawa, Kaduna, in August 2019.

His disappearance has remained one of the country’s most talked-about unresolved cases, with several groups and Nigerians repeatedly demanding answers from security agencies.
