The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Rano Local Government Headquarters in Kano State has succumbed to injuries sustained during a mob attack on his office on Sunday, 25th May 2025. The aggressive mob, reportedly protesting the death of a local man in police custody, also vandalised several vehicles during the incident.
The officer, M.A. Baba, was accused by the mob leaders of having arrested the individual who later died while in custody.
On Monday, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, visited the scene of the incident, during which time some individuals believed to be responsible for the riots were arrested.
Police Statement:
“The Kano State Police Command is aware of an unfortunate incident that occurred on 25th May 2025, at approximately 08:15 PM, in Rano Local Government Area. Following public outcry and complaints, a motorcycle mechanic, Abdullahi Musa, male, suspected to be under the influence of substances, was arrested and detained for reckless and dangerous riding.
“The suspect was taken into custody and later exhibited signs of weakness, necessitating his transfer to Rano General Hospital, where he unfortunately passed away on 26th May 2025, at around 06:00 AM, while receiving treatment.
“Subsequent to this incident, a group of miscreants mobilised and attacked the Rano Police Division, looting, setting parts of it and two vehicles ablaze, damaging ten other vehicles and severely injuring the Divisional Police Officer.
“The DPO was rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where he later died while undergoing treatment. Twenty-seven suspects have been apprehended in connection with these events. The situation has been brought under control, and normalcy has been restored.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, PhD, after visiting the scene and offering his condolences to the Emir of Rano, His Highness Ambassador Dr. Mohammed Isah Umar (Autan Bawo 19), has ordered a thorough and transparent investigation to ascertain the remote and immediate causes of these incidents and to bring those responsible for any wrongdoing to justice.
“The Command, while extending condolences to the family of the deceased DPO, who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty, urges residents to remain calm and to refrain from taking the law into their own hands, allowing the investigation to proceed without interruption.
“The Command assures the public of its commitment to maintaining peace and public order in the State and encourages everyone to cooperate with the authorities during this investigation.”
