The Kano People’s Rights Alliance (KPRA), on Saturday, issued a strong warning over what it described as emerging authoritarian tendencies in Kano State, accusing former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of attempting to exert undue influence over the current administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The group accused Kwankwaso of attempting to manipulate the political landscape of the state, describing such actions as a dangerous drift towards autocracy.
In a statement by its Chairman, Maikano Danlami, the group alleged that Kwankwaso’s actions pose a serious threat to democratic governance and the sovereignty of the elected government in the state.
According to KPRA, any attempt by a former governor to influence or control the affairs of the present administration undermines the will of the electorate and erodes the foundations of democracy in Kano State.
He said: “We must remind Kwankwaso that the people of Kano have spoken through the ballot, and it is their will that must prevail. Kwankwaso’s attempts to manipulate the political landscape of Kano reflect a dangerous trend toward autocracy.
“His actions suggest a desire to control the current administration, stifling the voices of the people and disregarding the democratic process that brought Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf into power.
“This is not merely a political maneuver; it is an affront to the rights of the citizens of Kano, who deserve the autonomy to make their own decisions without the shadow of outdated political machinations.
“The Kano People’s Rights Alliance believes that the people of Kano are capable of determining their own future. We reject any notion that suggests that a former governor should dictate the actions of an elected leader.
“The era of political overlords who seek to impose their will upon the people must come to an end. We call upon Rabiu Kwankwaso to respect the democratic process and allow Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to govern without interference.
“It is time for Kwankwaso to step back and allow the current administration to fulfill its mandate as entrusted by the electorate.
We urge the citizens of Kano to remain vigilant and to recognize the signs of an emerging dictatorship. It is our collective responsibility to safeguard our democracy and to ensure that our leaders are held accountable to the people they serve.
“We must not allow fear or intimidation to silence our voices or diminish our rights. The Kano People’s Rights Alliance calls on all stakeholders, including civil society organizations, political parties, and the media, to join us in this fight for democracy and the rights of the people. Together, we can resist the encroachment of authoritarianism and ensure that the will of the people prevails.”
The group also called on residents of Kano State to remain vigilant and alert to what it described as signs of emerging dictatorship, stressing that safeguarding democracy is a collective responsibility.
He said: “We reaffirm our commitment to the principles of democracy and the rights of the people of Kano State. We demand that Rabiu Kwankwaso cease his attempts to control the current administration and allow the people of Kano to chart their own course.
“The time for outdated political interference is over; the people of Kano deserve to make their own decisions in a free and democratic society.”
Reaffirming its commitment to democratic principles and the rights of Kano citizens, the group demanded that Kwankwaso cease any attempts to control the present administration.
