Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi has affirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting interfaith harmony in the state.

Mr Nwifuru made the remark when a delegation of the Muslim community in the state paid him a Sallah homage at the Government House, Abakaliki, on Friday.

He said, “Ebonyi state is a model for peaceful coexistence.

“We celebrate all communities and ensure that everyone can practice their faith freely,” the governor, represented by his Deputy, Mrs Patricia Obila, said.

He argued that the progress of any society “depends on a foundation of peace, respect, and cooperation among all religious communities.

“Peace goes beyond mere tolerance; it creates the environment needed for development and mutual respect.

“Ebonyi’s success lies in our ability to live together as one family, transcending religious differences,” Mr Nwifuru said.

In a remark, Nasir Nwaze, the chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, Ebonyi chapter, and leader of the delegation, requested that political appointments be based solely on merit and competence rather than religious affiliation.

“Many of us here would not have been able to observe our religious obligations without the governor’s support,” Mr Nwaze said.

According to him, the constitutional clause specifying religious considerations in political appointments should be repealed to remove a key source of religious agitation in the country.

He said that politicians had historically exploited religious differences to influence public sentiments.

He explained that a person’s faith, whether Muslim, Christian, or traditional, should not be used to determine their loyalty and ability to serve.

The state APC chairman, Stanley Okoro-Emegha, urged the Muslim community to prioritize peace during the celebration in the state and beyond.

Other members of the delegation, including community elders, religious scholars, and political leaders, further lauded the governor for his effort in promoting religious freedom and peaceful coexistence across Ebonyi.
