In recent hours, a wave of misinformation circulated regarding the passing of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon.
We are here to set the record straight: General Yakubu Gowon is very much alive and in good health.
The confusion arose due to a mix-up with another prominent individual.
Contrary to the false reports, it was not General Gowon who passed away but rather Professor Samuel Gowon Edoumiekumo, the immediate past Vice Chancellor of Niger Delta University in Bayelsa State.
We extend our condolences to his family and honor his memory.
Professor Edoumiekumo’s journey began with his First School Leaving Certificate from Akeindenowei Primary School, Toru Angiama, in 1982.
He later obtained his West Africa School Certificate from Ajeromi Ifelodun High School, Lagos, in 1988.
His academic journey was marked by excellence. Professor Edoumiekumo earned a Bachelor of Science degree, a Master of Science Degree, and two Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Economics from the University of Port Harcourt and the University of Nigeria Nsukka.
On May 17, 2017, he assumed the role of acting Vice-Chancellor of Niger Delta University, Bayelsa State, following the conclusion of Prof. Humphrey Ogoni’s tenure.
Later, on May 2, 2018, he was officially appointed as the fourth substantive Vice Chancellor of the institution.
The Niger Delta University, Bayelsa, mourns the loss of Professor Samuel Gowon Edoumiekumo, its immediate past Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities.
In a statement, the university described him as an “astute administrator.”
In this time of grief, we remember Professor Edoumiekumo as more than just an academic; he was a loving husband, father, and brother.
His dedication to education and university administration will be sorely missed.
Details of the funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
