The All Progressives Congress (APC) Hon kamilu sa’idu, has won the bye-election in Kauran Namoda Constituency of Zamfara State, defeating the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The contest saw a former adviser to ex-Governor Bello Matawalle emerge victorious over the PDP candidate, who was backed by Governor Dauda Lawal.

According to results announced by the electoral body, the APC candidate secured more than 70001 votes, while the PDP trailed with just 5341 vote.

The outcome was described by APC supporters as a decisive blow against the state government.

The election was tense, with reports of alleged intimidation and the deployment of state-backed vigilantes around polling units. The Federal Government had earlier warned against such practices during elections.

Despite the allegations, APC supporters celebrated the result as a sign of confidence in their party and in Matawalle’s political influence. They argued that the victory showed the people’s rejection of what they described as Governor Lawal’s failing administration.

Critics of the state government point to growing insecurity in Zamfara, including persistent banditry and attacks on rural communities, as evidence of mismanagement. They say the bye-election reflects public frustration with the current leadership.

Supporters of Matawalle recall his tenure as governor, when, according to them, the state enjoyed relative stability and a reduction in abductions. They view the bye-election as a call for a return to those policies.

For many in Zamfara, the bye-election result was more than just a local contest. It is seen as a referendum on the state’s political direction and a sign of what may come in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
