The Democracy Watch InitiativeD (DWI), has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for withdrawing recognition of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) leadership under David Mark and removing the party’s National Working Committee from its official portal.

The group described the move as a demonstration of INEC’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process.

In a statement by its Director of Strategic Communication, Tunji Bamidele, DWI said the decision underscores the commission’s resolve to uphold democratic principles and ensure that political parties operate within established legal frameworks.

In a statement by its Director of Strategic Communication, Tunji Bamidele, said taking the bold step of withdrawing recognition from ADC’s current disputed leadership, INEC has demonstrated its resolve to uphold the principles of democracy and to ensure that political parties adhere to their internal governance structures.

According to the group, INEC’s action is timely as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections, a period that requires strict adherence to democratic norms and heightened vigilance.

He said: “The withdrawal of recognition of the David Mark-led faction signifies more than just a bureaucratic action; it is a reaffirmation of the importance of legitimacy within political parties.

“The ADC, like all political entities, must reflect the will of its members and operate in accordance with its constitution. By removing the names of the National Working Committee from its portal, INEC has sent a clear message.

“leadership must be earned through democratic processes rather than assumed through questionable means. This is a vital message to all political stakeholders, reminding them of their responsibilities to uphold democratic ideals.

“Moreover, INEC’s reaffirmation of neutrality is crucial in the current political climate. As the nation gears up for the 2027 general elections, it is imperative that all political actors respect the independence of the electoral commission.

“Democracy thrives on the principle of fair play, and any actions that could disrupt the electoral process must be avoided. INEC’s call for political stakeholders to act responsibly is a timely reminder that the health of our democracy depends on the collective commitment of all parties involved.

“The DWI believes that a robust democracy necessitates the active participation of citizens, political parties, and institutions alike. It is the responsibility of political leaders to engage with their constituents transparently and respectfully.

“By fostering an environment of mutual respect and cooperation, we can ensure that the upcoming elections are not only fair but also reflective of the true will of the Nigerian people. The actions taken by INEC are a step in the right direction, and we urge all political stakeholders to embrace this spirit of cooperation.“

He called on the ADC leadership and other political parties to resolve internal disputes through constructive dialogue, warning that unresolved conflicts could negatively impact the electoral process.

He added, “The health of our democracy is contingent upon the ability of political parties to resolve their differences without resorting to actions that could undermine the electoral process.

“We encourage civil society organizations, media outlets, and the general public to remain vigilant and engaged. The upcoming elections are a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey, and it is essential that we all play our part in ensuring a transparent and credible electoral process.

“The DWI stands ready to support initiatives that promote civic education, voter awareness, and peaceful electoral participation.

The group also lauded INEC’s reaffirmation of neutrality, describing it as crucial to maintaining public trust in the electoral system, adding that, “As we move closer to the 2027 general elections, let us collectively reaffirm our commitment to democratic principles and work together to create an electoral environment that is fair, transparent, and reflective of the aspirations of the Nigerian people.

“We must remember that the strength of our democracy lies in our ability to engage in constructive dialogue, uphold the rule of law, and respect the institutions that safeguard our democratic values.”
