The Conference of Patriotic Nigerians (COPAN) has called on the organizers of the planned protest to suspend it in the overriding interest of Nigeria.
Group Coordinator Uchenna Odieli and Secretary O.D Jimoh, in a statement jointly signed on Wednesday, expressed strong conviction that the government of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu will fix the country for the present and future generations.
The statement said, “We recognize the constitutional rights of all Nigerians to protest as stated in our constitution.
However, at this point in our nation’s trajectory, protest is unnecessary because it is often counterproductive.
This proposed protest is undoubtedly politically motivated by unpatriotic elements in our country aimed at inciting the populace against our leaders for their selfish political gains and relevance.
What we need to do is partner with the government in moving the nation forward. Protests, as we have seen in the past in Nigeria, are a path to destruction and backwardness.
The properties destroyed by the EndSARS protesters some years ago have not yet been completely rebuilt by the country.
Nigeria as a nation has not yet fully recovered from the last protest. Against this background, it is foolhardy for any Nigerian to join the protest.
“It is unfair and uncharitable to call for a protest against a government that has just spent one year of a four-year tenure.
We understand that government is a continuum, but all the reasons given for the proposed protest are inherited by the current government. One year is too short to assess a government’s performance.”
