Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has issued a stark warning that recent judicial decisions risk undermining Nigeria’s democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

His comments follow a Court of Appeal ruling that removed the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), leaving the party effectively de-recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The decision has thrown the ADC’s participation in the upcoming polls into doubt.

In a strongly worded statement, Atiku described the ruling as an “existential threat” to democracy, arguing that it could set a dangerous precedent for the country’s electoral system. He noted that millions of Nigerians who support the ADC now face disenfranchisement, as the party is unable to meet essential electoral requirements.

“Justice delayed is justice denied,” Atiku said, urging the judiciary to act swiftly. He also cautioned against undue influence from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), calling on the courts to uphold fairness and protect the democratic process.

With political tensions mounting ahead of the 2027 elections, Atiku’s remarks underscore growing concerns over the fragility of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
