France captain Kylian Mbappe converted a second-half spot-kick to secure a gritty 1-0 victory over Paraguay on Saturday, booking his side’s place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals after a tense Round of 16 showdown that pushed the 2022 runners-up to their limit.

Didier Deschamps’ men laboured against a disciplined Paraguayan outfit that frustrated their attacking arsenal throughout a cagey opening period, with few clear-cut chances for either side. The tempo shifted after the restart, however, as Bradley Barcola, Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise combined to stretch the South American defence.

The breakthrough arrived in the 68th minute when VAR intervened after Désiré Doué was upended inside the penalty area. Referee Ilgiz Tantashev reviewed the footage and pointed to the spot. Mbappe stepped up two minutes later, drilling his low strike into the bottom-right corner with unerring composure to break the deadlock.

Paraguay refused to relent. Miguel Almirón orchestrated their response before making way for Gabriel Ávalos, while substitute Mauricio threatened late on, but goalkeeper Mike Maignan stood firm to preserve France’s advantage.

At the opposite end, Orlando Gill produced a string of outstanding saves to deny Mbappe, Manu Koné and Doué, keeping his side in contention until the dying moments. A tense ten minutes of stoppage time saw Paraguay launch a final assault, but the French defence held resolute to seal a narrow passage to the last eight.
