Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has urged factional leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party to seize last Thursday’s Supreme Court judgment as a turning point for reconciliation and strategic repositioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Saturday by his media office, Saraki described the verdict – which nullified the party’s Ibadan convention – as both a challenge and an opportunity to heal internal rifts. He reiterated that an interim leadership arrangement would have averted the protracted legal disputes now settled by the court.

“The Ibadan convention should never have taken place,” Saraki said. “An interim structure would have prevented the prolonged crisis we have witnessed.”

He disclosed that he had repeatedly shared this position with key stakeholders and presented it to a committee of elders led by Ambassador Hassan Adamu.

With the apex court affirming the National Working Committee chaired by Abdulrahman Mohammed Takushara as the legitimate leadership, Saraki declared: “There is now only one PDP. We must unite and work for the party’s success across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.”

He urged members embroiled in litigation to “retrace their steps” and focus on rebuilding rather than blame. “Those who lost in court should see their return to strengthen the party as another victory,” he added.

Saraki described the PDP as a viable platform for the 2027 elections and called on the newly affirmed leadership to prioritise unity, discipline, respect for the rule of law, and democratic ideals in the run-up to the next general vote.
