Manchester City moved to the summit of the Premier League on Wednesday, courtesy of a 1-0 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor that confirmed the hosts’ relegation to the Championship.
Erling Haaland’s fifth-minute strike proved decisive, though manager Pep Guardiola expressed frustration at his side’s failure to secure a more convincing margin. City now lead Arsenal on goals scored alone, with both title contenders having five matches remaining.
“We should have finished the game earlier,” Guardiola said. “We controlled possession but lacked ruthlessness in front of goal.”
Despite the slender scoreline, City have now won four consecutive league matches and are chasing a seventh title in nine seasons. However, their remaining fixtures are widely regarded as more challenging than Arsenal’s.
Burnley’s Relegation Confirmed
The defeat seals Burnley’s third Premier League relegation in five seasons. They will join Wolves in the Championship next term, having managed just 20 points from 34 games. Scott Parker’s side are now 13 points from safety with four matches left.
Burnley had shown early promise, winning three of their opening nine fixtures, but have since recorded only one victory in 25 matches. Parker, who previously won promotion with Fulham and Bournemouth, has again struggled to establish Premier League stability.
Elsewhere in the League
Bournemouth’s European ambitions suffered a blow as Sean Longstaff’s 97th-minute equaliser earned Leeds United a 2-2 draw. Junior Kroupi and Rayan (via a James Hill own goal) traded strikes before Rayan appeared to have secured victory for the Cherries. Longstaff’s late volley moved Bournemouth above Chelsea – who sacked Liam Rosenior on Wednesday – into seventh. Leeds now sit nine points clear of the relegation zone.
