Warns Young People to Investigate Families Before Marriage
A serving Nigerian military officer, who requested anonymity, has made a deeply disturbing allegation about the circumstances surrounding his long-running battle with drug addiction, claiming that members of his former wife’s family introduced him to drugs shortly after they met more than 17 years ago.
According to the officer, what began as a relationship that he believed would lead to marriage and a stable family life allegedly turned into what he described as a devastating personal and professional ordeal.
He claimed that shortly after meeting his former wife, she introduced him to her siblings—three women and two men—and alleged that all five of them were involved with drugs at the time.
The officer alleged that on one occasion when they went out together, his drink was secretly drugged. He claimed that he subsequently developed a dependency that has continued to affect his life many years later.
“When I met them, all five of them were into drugs. That very day, they drugged my drink when we went out, and before I knew what was happening, I became addicted,” he alleged.
“Drugs Have Ruined My Life”
Although the officer said he has been separated from his former wife for more than seven years, he claimed that his struggle with drug addiction has continued despite undergoing several rehabilitation programmes.
He said the alleged addiction has had serious consequences for his personal life and career in the military.
“How can I forgive these people? They have ruined my life and caused me serious setbacks in my career as a military officer,” he said.
The officer said that years after the marriage ended, he remains determined to overcome the problem but described the battle as one of the most difficult experiences of his life.
Fear for His Children.
The officer also expressed concern over his children, alleging that his former in-laws are planning to take them abroad.
He said his greatest fear is that his children could potentially be exposed to drugs.
“My fear is for my children, so that they will not also begin to give drugs to my children. Drugs have ruined my life,” he said.
He stated that he would resist any attempt to take his children out of the country without his consent.
Allegations of a Wider Family Problem
The military officer further alleged that the problem was not limited to his own experience.
He claimed that one of his former wife’s sisters also introduced her husband to drugs, allegedly contributing to the man’s continuing struggle with addiction.
According to him, the woman died approximately three years ago, while her former husband, whom he described as Igbo man from South-East Nigeria, is still battling drug addiction.
The officer also referred to another member of the family who is reportedly married to a prominent pastor in the country, raising questions about how the pastor allegedly manages the circumstances within the extended family.
A Painful Warning to Young Nigerians
Reflecting on his experience, the officer issued a strong warning to young people preparing to enter marriage.
He urged prospective couples not to limit their investigations to the character and background of the person they intend to marry, but to also understand the family environment into which they are entering.
“My advice to young people is that before you marry, do a thorough background check on the family so that you don’t get yourself destroyed.”
For the officer, the warning comes from personal experience. What he says began as a relationship more than 17 years ago has, according to him, developed into a battle that has affected his health, family, career and future.
