At least 25 people have been killed in a suspected bandit attack on Kawel community in the Mushere District of Bokkos Local Government Area, Plateau State.
The assault occurred around midnight on Monday, with assailants opening fire on residents and also targeting a primary healthcare facility, where four people lost their lives, according to Bokkos LGA Chairman Samuel Amalau. A community youth leader had earlier put the death toll at 30, but authorities have so far verified 25 fatalities.
Security agencies have yet to issue an official statement, as efforts continue to ascertain the full extent of the incident.
The attack comes roughly three months after a deadly ambush in the Garga axis of Kanam LGA, where at least 20 security personnel and vigilantes were killed by heavily armed bandits. The Kanam Development Association had reported that the victims included 12 security operatives—among them two senior military officers—and eight vigilantes, ambushed during a routine joint patrol near Wanka community. Bandits subsequently invaded Kyaram, stealing valuables worth millions and rustling numerous cattle.
The association has previously warned that communities along the borders of Plateau, Taraba, and Bauchi states face recurring threats, including kidnappings, cattle rustling, and violent attacks.
