Hon. Jafaaru Yakubu, Chairman of the House Committee on Nigeria–China Parliamentary Friendship Relationship, has commended President Bola Tinubu and China Harbour Engineering Company for the rapid progress recorded on the Shabu–Lafia–Makurdi bypass project.
Yakubu described the development as a major milestone, noting that the pace of work reflects the Federal Government’s renewed commitment to completing long-abandoned infrastructure across the country.
The lawmaker said the project, which had been neglected for several years, is now receiving urgent attention under Tinubu’s leadership, bringing relief to communities along the Nasarawa–Benue corridor.
According to him, the bypass is already easing traffic congestion, reducing travel time and opening up economic opportunities for residents and traders operating between the two North-Central states.
He said, “This is a clear demonstration that visionary leadership and international cooperation can deliver tangible benefits to the people.”
Yakubu further noted that the ongoing construction has also improved security in the area, as increased activity along the corridor has curtailed criminal operations that previously threatened commuters and farmers.
He added that the presence of construction workers and equipment has restored confidence among road users who now travel the route with less fear.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, who recently inspected the project on behalf of the President, said the bypass forms part of the Federal Government’s broader agenda to modernise Nigeria’s highway network.
Umahi assured that the administration remains determined to complete strategic road projects capable of boosting regional connectivity and economic growth.
Also speaking during the inspection, the Federal Controller of Works, Manri Ishiaku, praised China Harbour Engineering Company for its efficiency and commitment to meeting project timelines.
He described the Shabu–Lafia–Makurdi bypass as a “game-changer” that will significantly improve transportation and commercial activities in the North-Central region.
Yakubu also highlighted the importance of Nigeria’s partnership with China, stressing that the bypass project demonstrates the practical benefits of bilateral cooperation between both countries.
Residents of Nasarawa and Benue states have also expressed optimism over the development, saying the road will ease movement of farm produce, reduce travel stress and boost access to markets.
Community leaders described the project as a long-awaited intervention capable of stimulating local economies, strengthening regional integration and improving safety along the busy corridor.
