In a powerful endorsement of the role of discipline in nation-building, the All-Federal Capital Territory Sports Association (AFSA) has conferred its prestigious “Ambassador of Fair Play” award on Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (retd.). The honour recognises his unwavering commitment to harnessing sports as a critical vehicle for youth empowerment, curbing restiveness, and bolstering national security.

A high-powered delegation from AFSA, led by the former Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the Association’s Board of Trustees, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, presented the award during a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Defence at Ship House, Abuja. The visit marked a significant step towards forging a robust collaboration between the sports community and the military establishment.

Rt. Hon. Dogara emphasised that the primary goal of the visit was to explore pathways for a synergistic partnership that would elevate sports in the Federal Capital Territory to world-class standards. He articulated a vision where sports transcend mere recreation to become a catalyst for economic independence and a strategic tool for social engineering.

“Our intention is to collaborate with the Ministry to take sports in the FCT to a height where it begins to yield the desired results we see in more developed economies,” Dogara stated. “We believe that a structured approach to sports can transform the economic independence of our citizens, empower our teeming youth, and curtail restiveness. By engaging young people productively, we pave the way for lasting peace and significantly reduce the allure of criminality,” he explained .

The highlight of the ceremony was the decoration of the Minister with a symbolic gold medal by the President of AFSA, HRM Sir Eze Ifeanyi Eke. Speaking at the event, Sir Eke passionately appealed for the revival of barracks schools and sporting facilities across military formations. He noted that these structured environments have historically served as fertile breeding grounds for athletic talent, producing numerous medal-winning athletes who have represented Nigeria with distinction on national and international stages.

“Reviving these facilities is not just about infrastructure; it is about unlocking the immense potential within our barracks communities,” Sir Eke argued. “The Nigerian Army, in particular, has a storied history of producing world-class athletes. By investing in these grassroots structures, we can contribute significantly to national development and give our young people a path to greatness,” he added .

Providing further context on the award, the Director General of AFSA, Mr. Agbor Clinton, explained that the honour was meticulously selected to reflect the values embodied by the Minister and the Ministry of Defence. He drew a parallel between the rigorous discipline of the armed forces and the principles of fair play, which are central to AFSA’s mission.

“Our mission is to make fair play a household campaign for peace, unity, and economic progress across Nigeria,” Mr. Clinton said. “The discipline, integrity, and commitment to excellence exemplified by General Musa and the Nigerian Army align perfectly with our vision. We are using sports as a tool for positive societal transformation, and the Minister is the ideal ambassador for this cause” .

In a gesture underscoring the intellectual dimension of sports development, the Director of Female Sports Development for AFSA and Chairperson of the FCT Gymnastics Association, Dr. Jumai Ahmadu, presented three inspirational books to the Ministry. Dr. Ahmadu affirmed that the widespread adoption of the principles within these publications would deliver immense benefits to athletes, coaches, administrators, and the broader sports community, providing a roadmap for sustainable growth and excellence.

Receiving the award and accolades on behalf of the Minister, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Mr. Richard Pheelangwa, expressed profound gratitude. He described the conferment as a clear testament to General Musa’s steadfast commitment to sports development nationwide.

“General Musa is a true sports lover and a firm believer in the enormous benefits of sports for national peace and unity,” Mr. Pheelangwa stated. “He is an active participant in both indoor and outdoor sporting activities, including golf, and he understands firsthand the values of discipline, focus, and resilience that sports instil. The Minister has pledged his continued and unwavering support for all initiatives that harness the power of sports to promote national cohesion, empower our youth, and, by extension, strengthen the fabric of our security,” he reassured the delegation .

This honour serves as a powerful reminder of the vital intersection between defence, discipline, and sports. By recognising a figure like General Musa, AFSA has highlighted a growing consensus: that investing in the physical and mental development of youth through sports is not merely a social good but a fundamental pillar of national security and a prerequisite for building a stronger, more united Nigeria.
