The Chairman of the Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark, has questioned President Bola Tinubu over what he described as alleged moves against opposition parties.

Mark spoke at the ADC press conference on Thursday at the Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, following the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) decision to derecognise him and Rauf Aregbesola as leaders of the party.

Mark said the current political landscape raises concerns about the state of the country’s democracy.

“Right now, I speak to Nigerians at home and in diaspora. I also speak directly to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu: with 90% of the National Assembly and over 30 of Nigeria’s 36 Governors in the APC, President Tinubu, what are you afraid of?” he said.

He questioned the need for what he described as actions that could undermine electoral competition.

“If you are convinced that you have done well for the people who voted for you, why are you afraid of a free, fair, and transparent electoral contest?” Mark added.

The former Senate President further challenged the President’s democratic credentials.

“If you are indeed the democrat that you claim to be, why are you bent on destroying all opposition political parties?” he asked.

INEC had earlier removed the names of Mark and Aregbesola from its portal as national chairman and national secretary of the ADC, respectively, citing its interpretation of a Court of Appeal ruling on the party’s leadership dispute.
