The President of Helpline Social Support Initiative (HSSI), Dr. Jumai Ahmadu, has urged governments and civil society to increase deliberate investment in the development of the boy child, describing it as essential for stronger families, safer communities, and a more balanced society.
Speaking at an event themed “Flourish and Thrive: Investing in Boys for Stronger Families and Communities,” Dr. Ahmadu acknowledged the commendable global focus on girl-child empowerment but warned that the emotional, moral, social, and psychological needs of boys must no longer be overlooked.
“A secure future for the girl child can only be guaranteed when we intentionally raise responsible, emotionally balanced, and purpose-driven boys,” she stated. “These boys will grow into supportive fathers, respectful husbands, and compassionate leaders.”
Dr. Ahmadu expressed concern over the growing neglect of boys in many homes, noting that a lack of mentorship, emotional support, and positive role models has fuelled social challenges such as violence, substance abuse, crime, broken homes, and unhealthy attitudes towards women.
She stressed that investing in boys does not diminish girl-child empowerment but strengthens it by fostering healthier relationships and more stable environments for women and girls.
The Helpline president called on parents, schools, religious institutions, development partners, and community leaders to establish mentorship platforms, counselling systems, leadership programmes, and safe spaces for boys. She also urged society to normalise conversations around boys’ emotional wellbeing and to teach empathy, discipline, self-control, and respect for women.
“A thriving society cannot be built by empowering one gender while neglecting the other,” she added. “The future of our families depends on how well we nurture our boys today.”
