The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has conducted a trial test in essay writing as part of preparations for the computer-based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates in 2026.

The exercise, led by Amos Dangut, head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office, took place on Thursday at the WAEC Training and Testing Centre in Ogba, Lagos.

Senior secondary school students participated in the trial, which aimed to familiarise them with the upcoming computer-based format that incorporates both objective and essay components.

Mr Dangut explained that the initiative is designed to prepare candidates for full participation in digital examinations while gradually addressing technological disparities among schools across the nation.

He informed the students that they were making history as the first group to undertake a comprehensive computer-based test that combines both objectives and essays.

He further noted that while some schools would conduct both components online, those in areas lacking computer access would continue with the traditional essay format.

“Our aim is to establish an inclusive system where every student can sit for the examination conveniently, irrespective of their location,” Mr Dangut stated.

He assured that the new system would enhance the efficiency and accessibility of the examination, ensuring fairness and comfort for all participating candidates.

Mr Dangut reaffirmed WAEC’s commitment to upholding the integrity and credibility of its examinations while supporting students in achieving academic excellence.

He encouraged students to embrace digital learning, describing technology-driven examinations as the future of education and essential for global competitiveness.
