Magistrate Ajuma Igama declined to take the defendants’ pleas due to lack of jurisdiction. She ordered them held at the Makurdi correctional centre and adjourned the case until 11 May for further mention.

Prosecutor Insp Inedu Friday told the court that the complaint was lodged by one Kanshio Cyprin of Ukemberegya in Logo Local Government Area. Mr Cyprin stated that while working on a farm with five others, Yarnum and Changoji – along with several members of the Changoji family – attacked them.

He said the assailants trespassed onto the land armed with sticks, cutlasses and guns, injured one person, Terhile Abraham, on the forehead, and made off with a wheelbarrow of seed yams valued at N136,000.

Mr Friday noted that the defendants were arrested during police investigations, while other suspects remain at large. He confirmed that inquiries are ongoing and requested a new mention date.

The prosecutor added that the alleged offences contravene Sections 97, 349, 254 and 288 of the Penal Code Law of Benue State 2004, as well as Section 3(1) of the Robbery and Firearm Special Provisions Act 2004.
