Ankara, Türkiye– In a significant move to bolster economic ties, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Türkiye has firmly reiterated his nation’s aim to achieve a trade volume of $5 billion with Nigeria. This announcement came during a joint press briefing with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday in Ankara, as part of Mr. Tinubu’s state visit to Türkiye.

The commitment, detailed in a statement from presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, signals a robust intention to deepen commercial relations between the two nations. President Erdogan highlighted that discussions aimed at fulfilling this trade target have already commenced, marking a proactive approach to international economic collaboration.

### Establishment of a Joint Economy and Trade Committee

A pivotal development during the briefing was the establishment of a Joint Economy and Trade Committee. This committee is designed to facilitate investment expansion and enhance commercial cooperation between Türkiye and Nigeria. President Erdogan emphasised the necessity of this body, stating, “Today, we conducted a comprehensive review of our relations in trade, investment, energy, education, and the defence industry.”

He further remarked on the significant potential for growth in trade and investment, underscoring the commitment to achieving the ambitious $5 billion target. “The Joint Economy and Trade Committee we agreed to establish today will be instrumental in supporting investments in Nigeria,” he added.

### Praise for Nigeria’s Economic Reforms

During the briefing, President Erdogan commended President Tinubu’s dedication to attracting investment, noting the presence of Nigerian ministers and senior officials as a testament to strong political will. He particularly highlighted Nigeria’s recent reforms in the energy sector, describing these initiatives as crucial for the country’s economic restructuring. Erdogan expressed optimism about potential collaborations between the Turkish Petroleum Corporation and Nigerian partners, suggesting that such partnerships could yield favourable results for both nations.

### Commitment to Regional Security

In addition to economic discussions, the two leaders addressed the pressing issue of regional security. President Erdogan pledged Türkiye’s unwavering support to Nigeria in its fight against terrorism, especially in the Sahel region. “We stand by the friendly people of Nigeria in their fight against terrorism under the leadership of President Tinubu,” he stated. Erdogan also offered Türkiye’s extensive experience in military training and intelligence cooperation, expressing confidence that fruitful outcomes would emerge from engagements with Türkiye’s defence industry companies.

A Vision for Inclusive Economic Growth

In his remarks, President Tinubu expressed gratitude for Türkiye’s readiness to enhance cooperation across various strategic sectors. He commended Erdogan’s commitment to fostering collaboration aimed at promoting freedom, stability, and shared prosperity. “We commend your willingness to collaborate and work together to promote freedom, stability, and shared prosperity,” he said.

Emphasising the need for inclusive economic development, Tinubu posed a critical question: “How do we build an inclusive economy together and ensure vulnerable people are involved in economic growth?” This query underscores Nigeria’s commitment to ensuring that all segments of society benefit from economic advancements.

President Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to regional peace and stability, despite ongoing security challenges. He highlighted discussions centred around combating terrorism and addressing agents of destabilisation in the region. Furthermore, he praised President Erdogan’s role in promoting global peace, particularly Türkiye’s engagement in Somalia.

Exchange of Cooperation Agreements

The bilateral meeting culminated in the exchange of nine cooperation agreements, covering a diverse range of sectors. These agreements addressed diaspora policy, defence cooperation, the establishment of the trade committee, halal quality infrastructure, education collaboration, media partnerships, diplomacy training, social services, and women’s affairs.

This comprehensive approach not only strengthens the economic ties between Türkiye and Nigeria but also lays the groundwork for collaborative efforts across various sectors, reflecting both nations’ commitment to mutual growth and stability.

Conclusion

The ambitious target of a $5 billion trade volume between Türkiye and Nigeria marks a new chapter in their bilateral relations. With robust plans for cooperation across trade, investment, and security, both nations are poised to unlock substantial economic potential. As discussions progress and agreements are enacted, the world will be watching closely to see how this partnership evolves and impacts the broader economic landscape in Africa and beyond.

This strategic alliance is not just a milestone in trade; it represents a shared vision for prosperity and peace, paving the way for a more inclusive global economy.
