In a decisive operation, troops from the 1 Division/Sector 1 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA successfully thwarted a banditry attempt and neutralised a suspected terrorist during a rapid ambush in the Maraban Rido area of Kaduna State. This operation, executed on the evening of 22 January 2026, underscores the commitment of the Nigerian Army to combat banditry and ensure the safety of local communities.

The operation was initiated following a distress call that alerted the military to the presence of armed bandits in Anguwan Fulan village, who had reportedly rustled livestock. Acting on this vital intelligence, troops were promptly deployed to the area to conduct a hasty ambush aimed at intercepting the fleeing bandits.

Upon arrival, the troops engaged the armed criminals with superior firepower, compelling them to flee in disarray, leaving behind wounded comrades. The Nigerian Army’s tactical prowess was further demonstrated as the troops continued their pursuit into the surrounding forested regions, particularly the Kankomi forest, where they successfully made contact with the bandits again at a suspected crossing point near Anguwan Sarki.

Tactical Engagement and Recovery

During this subsequent engagement, the Nigerian troops maintained their strategic advantage, overwhelming the bandits with a high volume of fire. This led to the abandonment of their loot, including rustled livestock, which the troops successfully recovered.

The early hours of 23 January 2026 saw further exploitation of the ambush site, culminating in the neutralisation of one terrorist. In addition, troops recovered two AK-47 rifles, four magazines, and fifteen rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition from the scene. This successful operation not only disrupted the banditry activities in the region but also significantly contributed to the reduction of armed violence in Kaduna State.

Commendation and Continued Vigilance

Major General Abubakar Sadiq Mohammed Wase, the General Officer Commanding 1 Division Nigerian Army and Commander of Sector 1 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, commended the gallant troops for their bravery and professionalism during the encounter. He emphasised the importance of sustaining operational momentum in the relentless pursuit of criminals hiding in the region.

General Wase reassured the public of the unwavering commitment of the troops to protect lives and property. He urged citizens to remain vigilant and continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies, which is crucial for the success of operations against banditry.

Community Engagement and Future Operations

The Nigerian Army’s proactive measures in engaging with local communities have been pivotal in gathering intelligence and fostering a collaborative approach to security. By encouraging the public to report suspicious activities, the military aims to enhance its operational effectiveness and create a safer environment for all.

As the troops continue their operations, they remain focused on dismantling the networks that support banditry and ensuring that the gains made in recent engagements are not only maintained but also built upon. The commitment of the Nigerian Army to eradicating the threat posed by armed bandits is evident, and their actions reflect a broader strategy aimed at restoring peace and stability in Kaduna State and beyond.

Conclusion

The recent success of the troops in foiling the bandit attack and neutralising a terrorist highlights the effectiveness of coordinated military operations in combating insecurity. As the situation evolves, the Nigerian Army’s dedication to protecting citizens and reclaiming safety in affected regions remains steadfast. The collaboration between military forces and local communities is key to achieving long-term peace and security in Kaduna State.
