The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a genuine democrat whose commitment to Nigeria’s democratic consolidation is evident in his unwavering respect for electoral independence.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to the City Boy Movement headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, Akume commended the President for refraining from interference in the recently concluded Osun State electoral process—a departure from past practices.
“The President never bothered to intervene in the electoral process recently concluded in Osun State. That is what democracy should be about. It is way better than what used to happen in the past,” the SGF stated.
Akume emphasised that Tinubu’s governance approach reflects a leader determined to strengthen democratic institutions while simultaneously pursuing economic reforms. He highlighted visible achievements across taxation, education, healthcare, and women’s empowerment, noting ongoing reforms toward a unified tax system designed to create a more efficient fiscal environment.
In the education sector, Akume cited interventions through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), while pointing to the opening of specialised hospitals as evidence of healthcare progress.
The SGF urged Nigerians to harness the nation’s ethnic, cultural, and religious diversity as a source of strength rather than division.
“This is a huge country with diverse people. We should not turn this diversity and pluralism into negativity. We should use these to build our country in a positive way,” he said.
Akume noted significant progress across agriculture, water resources, and other strategic sectors, affirming that President Tinubu is discharging his constitutional mandate with distinction.
He described the City Boy Movement as critical to national progress and called on members to remain committed to development ideals.
“Never look back and don’t allow anyone to deceive you. You are adequately positioned to communicate the achievements of this administration to the people,” he said.
The SGF called for sustained support for the administration’s reform agenda, stressing that Nigeria’s diversity, democratic institutions, and abundant resources could be harnessed to build a more prosperous and resilient nation.
Movement Pledges 10 Million Youth Mobilisation
In his remarks, City Boy Movement Director-General, Shoga Francis, expressed profound appreciation for the SGF’s visit, describing it as a demonstration of commitment to engaging young Nigerians in nation-building.
Shoga reaffirmed the Movement’s dedication to President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and announced plans to mobilise 10 million young Nigerians through an extensive membership drive across all 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and diaspora structures.
“As a movement, we are determined to work tirelessly… to mobilise Nigerians, particularly young people, towards a decisive and overwhelming victory for Mr President in the 2027 general elections,” he averred.
The Director-General said the initiative aims to establish sustainable grassroots structures that promote citizen engagement, communicate government achievements, and encourage informed democratic participation.
The highlight of the meeting was the conferment of the Chairperson, Advisory Council of the City Boy Movement on the SGF, in recognition of his contributions to the Renewed Hope Agenda and youth engagement in nation-building.
