Senator Saliu Mustapha, representing Kwara Central, has formally resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) amid escalating political tensions within the party’s Kwara State chapter.

The lawmaker announced his decision on Thursday via his verified Facebook page, publishing a resignation letter dated August 14 and addressed to the APC chairman in Gambari Ward 1, Ilorin East Local Government Area.

Mustapha disclosed that the decision followed weeks of extensive consultations with stakeholders, supporters, and constituents across Kwara Central Senatorial District.

“Following careful consideration of the recent developments in the All Progressives Congress in Kwara State, I have formally resigned my membership of the party in the state,” he stated.

The senator emphasised that the move was not taken lightly, adding: “This is not a decision I have taken lightly. It follows weeks of extensive consultations and engagements with relevant stakeholders, my supporters, constituents across Kwara Central Senatorial District, and well-meaning Kwarans.”

Mustapha, who secured his mandate on the APC platform, explained that his political choices had always been guided by commitment to people, principles, and purpose.

“Where the path of a political platform no longer sufficiently aligns with these convictions and the aspirations of the people one represents, the honourable thing to do is to chart a new course,” he said.

The senator expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and the APC leadership for relationships forged and experience gained during his tenure with the party.

“To my constituents, supporters, political associates and stakeholders in Kwara State and beyond, I assure you that while my political platform may change, my principles, my purpose and my commitment to the people remain unchanged,” Mustapha affirmed.

“I remain steadfast in my service to the people of Kwara Central, Kwara State and Nigeria at large.”

Political Realignments Intensify

Mustapha’s resignation comes as political manoeuvring gathers momentum in Kwara ahead of the 2027 general elections. The senator had been associated with the G15/TOP group, a coalition of aggrieved APC stakeholders in the state.

Observers suggest his departure could signal further defections as the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other political movements position themselves for the forthcoming electoral contest.

The APC is yet to issue an official response to Mustapha’s resignation at the time of this report.
