President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has eulogised the former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, saying his 35 years of service demonstrated a legacy of excellence.
In a goodwill message dated Friday, 27 March, 2026, Tinubu recalled his first encounter with Egbetokun in 1998, noting his character and competence. “Egbetokun distinguished himself across operational, investigative and administrative roles,” Tinubu said. “He evolved from a promising officer into a refined, strategic leader.”
The president said Egbetokun’s career is a shining example of excellence, integrity and dedication to service, adding that the former IGP’s rise through the ranks was marked by his unwavering commitment to professionalism and pursuit of justice.
According to President Tinubu, “As IGP, he brought stability and professionalism, advancing institutional strengthening and intelligence-driven policing. His tenure was marked by significant reforms and initiatives aimed at enhancing the force’s capacity to address emerging security challenges.”
He cited Egbetokun’s appointment as IGP in 2023 as a testament to divine favour, saying: “Egbetokun’s faith has been a guiding force throughout his career, sustaining him through challenges and triumphs.
Reacting to Tinubu’s goodwill message, Egbetokun said: “Today, I stand before God and His people, not to speak of achievement but to acknowledge grace,” as he credited his success to God’s intervention.
The retired IGP expressed gratitude to his mentor, President Tinubu and Oba Ebenezer Olufemi Alani Egunjobi, for their support and guidance.
He said: “I remain eternally grateful,” adding that his relationships with these leaders have played a significant role in shaping his career and informing his approach to leadership.
Egbetokun said his retirement marks a transition, not an end. “I do not merely retire, I transition under divine direction, with peace in my heart, with joy in my spirit,” adding that his story is a testament to God’s faithfulness and the power of excellence.
As Nigeria’s law enforcement community bids farewell to Egbetokun, his legacy serves as a beacon of inspiration for generations to come.
Egbetokun’s impact extends beyond his tenure as IGP. He has inspired a new generation of law enforcement officers, instilling in them the values of professionalism, integrity and service. His commitment to justice and human rights has set a high standard for the force, and his legacy will continue to shape Nigeria’s security landscape for years to come.
As Egbetokun embarks on this new chapter, he does so with a sense of purpose and fulfillment. His journey is a reminder that with faith, dedication, and hard work, anything is possible.
