The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted a three-day spell of thunderstorms and cloudy conditions across the country, beginning Sunday through Tuesday.

In its weather outlook released from Abuja, NiMet predicted sunny intervals with patches of cloud over the northern region, alongside early morning thunderstorms. Light rains are expected in parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, Borno, Taraba and Adamawa, with heavier, moderate thunderstorms developing during the afternoon and evening across most of the north.

Over the North-Central region, including the Federal Capital Territory, NiMet anticipates sunny skies with cloud patches and early thunderstorms accompanied by light rain in Kwara, Niger and Kogi. Afternoon and evening hours will bring moderate thunderstorms to much of the area.

The southern region is expected to experience cloudy conditions, with morning light rains over Oyo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom. Later in the day, moderate rains will spread across Ondo, Ekiti, Osun, Imo, Abia, Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom.

On Monday, the north will see sunny skies with cloud patches, with morning thunderstorms and moderate rain over Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms are forecast for Yobe, Jigawa, Borno, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba and Adamawa. The North-Central region will be cloudy with sunny spells, with morning thunderstorms in Niger, Kwara, Nasarawa and the FCT, giving way to sunnier conditions later. The south will remain cloudy, with morning light rains across much of the southwest and moderate rains later in the day over the south-south and southeast.

On Tuesday, NiMet expects sunny skies across the north, with afternoon and evening thunderstorms and moderate rain in Katsina, Kano, Kebbi, Kaduna and the northeast. The North-Central region will see morning sunshine with cloud patches, followed by afternoon and evening thunderstorms with moderate rain. The south will stay cloudy, with morning light rains in Akwa Ibom and Cross River, and moderate rains developing later.

NiMet has issued critical safety warnings: strong winds may precede thunderstorms, so residents should secure loose objects, avoid driving in heavy rain, disconnect electrical appliances, and stay clear of tall trees due to falling branches. Airline operators are urged to obtain airport-specific weather briefings from NiMet for operational planning, and the public is advised to monitor official weather updates.
