In a significant move to bolster community resilience against misinformation, a two-day workshop has been organised for Islamic clerics by Alkalanci, a leading fact-checking media firm, in collaboration with the Sokoto State Ministry of Religious Affairs. The initiative, titled “Combatting False Narratives and Promoting Media Literacy,” attracted esteemed clerics from across Sokoto State, all united in the pursuit of truth and integrity.

The workshop aimed to equip religious leaders with essential skills to identify and counteract misleading narratives that threaten social cohesion. In his opening remarks, Sokoto State Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Assistant Professor Jabir Maihula, urged clerics not only in Sokoto but throughout Nigeria to uphold objectivity and truth as fundamental tenets of their teachings.

“Truth fosters untainted integrity, commands respect, and creates a safer society for all,” said Prof. Maihula. His assertion underscores the vital role of religious leaders in guiding their communities towards a more informed and harmonious existence.

The workshop featured a presentation by Comrade Usman Mohammed Binji, the Sokoto State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ). He addressed the pressing issue of information disorder, which he described as one of the most severe social challenges facing contemporary Nigerian society.

“The rapid expansion of social media, coupled with declining trust in traditional information gatekeepers, has created fertile ground for sensationalism, political manipulation, misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech,” Binji stated. He elaborated on the dire consequences of such phenomena, highlighting their contributions to social tension, electoral violence, religious misunderstanding, and, in extreme cases, loss of life.

Despite these challenges, Binji expressed optimism regarding the potential of mosques and Islamic clerics to serve as effective centres for verification and guidance. He emphasised the importance of promoting media literacy, ethical communication, and community resilience as vital strategies to combat misinformation.

The collaborative effort between Alkalanci and the Sokoto State Ministry of Religious Affairs marks a pivotal step towards fostering a more informed populace. By empowering clerics with the tools to discern and address false narratives, the workshop seeks to create a ripple effect of truth and accountability within communities.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, the responsibility of religious leaders in guiding their followers through the complexities of information has never been more critical. The workshop serves as a reminder of the essential role that faith-based leaders play in shaping societal values and promoting peace.

In conclusion, the initiative underscores the urgent need for collective action against misinformation, calling on all sectors of society to engage in the fight for truth. By working together, communities can build resilience against the tide of falsehoods that threaten to undermine social harmony and democratic processes.
