The Rivers chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused Governor Siminalayi Fubara of betraying both the party and the people of Rivers by abandoning the party amidst its ongoing political turmoil.
Nname Ewor, a factional caretaker chairman of the party, made this statement during a press conference on Thursday in Port Harcourt.
The conflict between Mr Fubara and members of the state assembly began less than a year after he took office, subsequently plunging the state into a serious political crisis.
Mr Ewor claimed that President Bola Tinubu intervened, adding that part of the agreement stipulated that Mr Fubara would not seek re-election.
He also mentioned that Mr Fubara was instructed to reinstate Ohna Awuse as chairman of the Rivers Traditional Rulers Council.
Furthermore, he disclosed that other agreements included the removal of Tammy Danagogo as secretary to the state government and Edison Ehie as chief of staff.
He alleged that Mr Fubara had failed to honour all the terms of the agreement, leading to the collapse of the peace deal and the subsequent declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers by Mr Tinubu.
The chairman noted that Mr Fubara had entered into another agreement with Mr Tinubu shortly before the emergency rule was lifted, which ultimately led to his defection from the PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He explained that after announcing his defection, Mr Fubara began to boast that Mr Tinubu would exert pressure on the State House of Assembly members to pass the 2026 budget.
He further stated that the governor claimed Mr Tinubu would also compel the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to support his re-election bid.
Mr Ewor called on Mr Fubara to reveal the terms of the agreement he reached with Mr Tinubu before the emergency rule was lifted.
“The mandate Fubara holds was granted to him by the people of Rivers, and all his actions and inactions affect those whose mandate he carries.
“It is therefore incumbent upon him at this time to disclose to the people of Rivers the terms of the peace agreement he entered into with Tinubu prior to the lifting of the emergency rule.
“This will enable the people of Rivers to make informed decisions,” he stated.
Mr Ewor recalled that the PDP challenged the declaration of the state of emergency at the Supreme Court to protect its mandate.
“Today, Fubara has taken our mandate to the APC, which is, in every sense, unjust,” he remarked.
Mr Ewor further accused Mr Fubara of misleading them into attending the PDP convention in Ibadan, only for him to be absent from the meeting, which is currently under litigation.
He also revealed his full support for Mr Wike’s calls for Mr Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
