In a thrilling final held in Munich, Portugal triumphed over Spain, winning 5-3 in a penalty shootout and securing their second Nations League trophy.
Cristiano Ronaldo levelled the score at 2-2 in the 61st minute, yet neither side could find a winner in regular time. After being substituted prior to extra time, Ronaldo was seen joyously weeping on the sidelines as Ruben Neves netted the winning penalty following Diogo Costa’s save against Alvaro Morata.
Spain, who had won the previous edition, initially took the lead in the 21st minute with a goal from Martin Zubimendi. However, Portugal quickly responded, with Nuno Mendes scoring five minutes later.
Mikel Oyarzabal restored Spain’s lead before the interval, but Ronaldo’s volleyed equaliser brought Portugal back into contention.
Portugal’s successful penalty takers included Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes, and Nuno Mendes, while Morata’s shot was saved. Neves’ penalty sealed the victory, making Portugal the first nation to win two Nations League titles, while denying Spain that honour.
Earlier, France secured bronze by defeating Germany 2-0 in Stuttgart, marking Germany’s first consecutive losses since 2023. Kylian Mbappe assisted Michael Olise for a late goal to round off the match.
