Egypt secured their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Australia, after a gripping 1-1 draw that stretched into extra time on Friday.

The Pharaohs seized an early advantage when Emam Ashour converted Karim Hafez’s inviting cross from close range in the 13th minute. Australia, however, fought back after the interval and levelled in fortunate fashion when defender Mohamed Hany inadvertently deflected a free-kick past his own goalkeeper in the 55th minute, forcing the contest into an additional 30 minutes.

Both sides pushed for a winner during extra time, with Egypt coming closest on several occasions. Mohamed Salah, Rami Rabia and Haissem Hassan were all denied by inspired goalkeeping from Australia’s Patrick Beach, while the Socceroos applied late pressure without finding a decisive breakthrough.

With the tie destined for spot-kicks, Egypt held their nerve impeccably. Mahmoud Saber, Rabia, Salah and Hossam Abdelmaguid all converted from 12 yards. Australia responded through Jackson Irvine and Awer Mabil, but Harry Souttar blazed his effort over the crossbar before Lucas Herrington struck the woodwork, handing Egypt a deserved victory.

Captain Salah remained influential throughout, orchestrating attacking moves and calmly dispatching his penalty to keep his side in control during the shootout.

The result sends Egypt into the last 16, while Australia exit the tournament after a valiant effort that ultimately fell short in the most unforgiving of circumstances.
