PDP crisis will not determine Atiku’s fate in 2027 – Support group

Published

on

A support group, Nigerian Youths for Atiku (NYFA), says internal disputes within Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would not determine former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s fortune in the 2027 general elections.

The group, which has been throwing its weight behind Abubakar, the 2023 PDP presidential candidate, stated this in a statement on Thursday in Lagos.

NYFA’s Director of Communications, Mr Dare Dada, said that the group’s position was made known after its strategic meeting on Wednesday Lagos.

Dada, however, urged the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) to urgently intervene in the party’s internal disputes and restore sanity to its ranks.

“NYFA has critically assessed the ongoing power tussle within the party, where certain individuals appear more focused on personal gains rather than the collective wealth of the Peoples Democratic Party.

“It is rather unfortunate that the party has strayed from the vision of its founding fathers and leaders who envisioned good governance, democratic consolidation and a vibrant platform for leadership development.

“Recent events have not only exposed the incompetence of the current leadership but have also further diminished the reputation of a party once hailed as the largest in Africa.

“We make bold to say that the orchestrated disputes will not determine the fate of Atiku in 2027 as he is ready to put smiles on Nigerians’ faces,” Dada said.

According to him, the resignation of prominent members and elected officials across the three geo-political zones is a clear indication that the PDP is in turmoil.

“Personal interests have taken precedence over the party’s collective mission, endangering our shared political future.

“It is time for individuals who once benefitted from the party to stop undermining its unity for selfish gains.

“The pretence that all is well within the party must end because the reality tells a different story,” the spokesman said.

He said that NYFA was aware of the fact that the ongoing efforts to suspend the Chairman of the party’s Disciplinary Committee, Chief Tom Ikimi, was part of a broader scheme to weaken the party.

According to him, this follows a similar attempt to suspend the Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BOT), Sen. Adolphus Wabara, from his ward.

“These are considered to be desperate and outdated tactics which will not succeed. These internal betrayals only serve to destabilise the party further,” he said.

Dada said that the PDP Governors’ Forum must remain united against those he called the fifth columnists and all those working to undermine the party in 2027.

Dada said that PDP leadership must instill discipline in the party to brighten its fortune in 2027.

According to him, PDP cannot be keeping those who openly worked against it in the last election, while simultaneously encouraging the suspension of the BOT chairman who had been championing unity.

“Their actions suggest that their primary goal is to prevent Alhaji Atiku Abubakar from contesting in 2027 rather than positioning PDP as a viable alternative for Nigerians.

“PDP must redeem itself and prove to Nigerians that it is not an annex of the APC.

“A party that once stood as the symbol of Nigeria’s democracy has, regrettably, become a shadow of itself, allowing its leaders to work against its own interests.”

“The time to reclaim the PDP’s legacy is now,” he stated.

He added the party had arrived at a critical political crossroads where members must now decide their future. (NAN)

Suspension

The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has cautioned Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, and Alex Otti, governor of Abia state, over alleged anti-party activities.

In a statement released after a national executive council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Monday, the faction cautioned Obi against any actions that could undermine the unity and integrity of the party.

“NEC in session in exercise of its duties, hereby caution the former presidential candidate of our great party not to participate in any action capable of undermining the peace, unity, and integrity of the party as the NEC will not hesitate to issue stiffer penalties if found culpable,” the statement reads.

The party also took aim at Otti, accusing him of engaging in conduct contrary to the interests of the LP, including holding “unauthorised” stakeholder meetings and conducting LG elections using another political party.

According to NEC, Otti has been attempting to factionalise the party by convening what it described as an “illegal NEC” meeting scheduled for Wednesday.

The faction further alleged that the governor is plotting to destabilise the LP before defecting to another party ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

“NEC in session notes the various anti-party activities of Gov. Alex Otti, including calling of unauthorized stakeholders meeting and usurping the powers of NEC,” the statement reads.

“He also conducted LGA elections using another political party. The governor has also intensified his effort to factionalize the party leadership by calling an illegal NEC schedule to hold on Wednesday.

“The leadership of the Labour Party is also aware of the governor’s plot to cripple our party before moving to another political party where he hopes to contest the 2027 governorship election.

“His anti-party activities are unbecoming of a highly respected personality and can no longer be acceptable. NEC stated that it will not hesitate to discipline him in line with Article 19 of the Party’s Constitution.

“NEC in session noted that it would not hesitate to discipline any other erring member who violates the party constitution regardless of how big or powerful such individuals may be.”

On Monday, Obi and Otti announced a stakeholders’ summit set for Wednesday, April 9.

Abia: I will retire when I finish my 8 years tenure – Otti

Published

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has firmly ruled out any plans to contest for a Senate seat after his tenure ends.

He made the declaration on Saturday during a reception held in his honour by the Anambra Development Unions Association, Aba branch.

Otti dismissed speculations of a senatorial ambition, describing the rumours as baseless and misleading.

“When I finish my eight years here, I will retire. I am not going to Abuja,” Otti said, urging critics to stop spreading falsehoods.

He stressed the need to give room for younger leaders, citing the evolving political landscape and rising youth participation.

“We are no longer that young. Society is changing, and the young ones are rising. It’s time we give them the opportunity,” he added.

The governor also announced plans to revisit the 2011 disengagement of 154 state workers, mostly teachers, from the civil service.

He said the State Head of Service would be directed to urgently review the matter for possible redress.

Otti hinted that those under 65 might be reengaged on contract, especially given the teacher shortage across the state.

He criticised the workers’ dismissal on the basis of state of origin, calling it unjust and illegal.

“For those outside the age bracket, we’ll find fair compensation mechanisms,” the governor assured.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to justice, inclusivity, and correcting the wrongs of previous governments.

In separate remarks, lawmaker Stephen Ucheonye and Chief Obiora Nwakpadolo praised Otti’s leadership and developmental strides.

They said the governor’s performance inspired the decision to hold the reception in his honour. (NAN)

Ukachukwu Emerges Victorious Over Ozigbo to Secure APC Nomination for Anambra Governorship

Nicholas Ukachukwu, a former House of Representatives member, has successfully obtained the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial ticket for the upcoming Anambra governorship election.

Ukachukwu won decisively during the party’s primary election held on Saturday, outpacing his nearest competitor, Valentine Ozigbo, along with other candidates by a significant margin.

He garnered 1,455 votes, while Ozigbo received 67 votes. Other aspirants, Edozie Madu and Johnbosco Onunkwo, secured 8 and 26 votes, respectively.

The Anambra governorship election is scheduled for November 8, 2025.

In a statement following his victory, Ukachukwu vowed to lead the state to the APC.

“We will ensure that Anambra is delivered to the APC. I want to emphasize that no one has ever won the governorship of Anambra without my backing; it has never occurred,” he remarked.

“I have played the role of a godfather, but now I aspire to be the father of the father — it’s time to move beyond the traditional godfather model.”

Notably, just hours before the primary election, three aspirants withdrew from the race, including former federal lawmaker Chukwuma Umeoji, Obiora Okonkwo, and Paul Chukwuma, who has since resigned from the party.
